Chickpeas in Tomato Onion Sauce (3+4)

This was one of the first chickpea recipes I tried which I still regularly make today.

What you need and how to make it

Ingredients

  • 250 g chickpeas
  • 300 ml water
  • 5 mid-sized chopped onions
  • 3 Tbsp ghee
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground hot pepper powder
  • 1 tsp ground coriander powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric
  • 5 - 7 whole cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 10 - 15 black pepper seeds
  • 250 ml canned or tetra-packed crushed tomatoes

Preparation

  1. Soak the chickpeas over night in water. Next day boil them in a pot for about one hour and drain after.
  2. Heat ghee in a sauce pan, add the chopped onions and simmer until golden.
  3. Add the crushed tomatoes and the spices and simmer for an additional 20 minutes. Stir regularly to avoid burning.
  4. Add the drained chickpeas and simmer for another 10 - 15 minutes.

Chickpeas need a lot of seasoning. You might have to spice them up a bit more.
